Supporting a Smooth and Successful Recovery

After Dental Implant Surgery

Proper aftercare plays an important role in the healing and success of your dental implant treatment. Learn how to care for your implant site, manage your recovery, and follow important guidelines to support healing after your procedure.

Post-Operative Care for Successful Healing

After Placement of Dental Implants

Following your dental implant procedure, proper aftercare is important for protecting the implant site and supporting a smooth recovery. Follow these instructions carefully to promote healing and help achieve the best possible results.

Home Instructions After Dental Implant Surgery

After surgery, avoid disturbing the implant area. Do not rinse, spit forcefully, or touch the surgical site on the day of your procedure. A healing abutment may be visible through the gum tissue, which is a normal part of the implant process.

Bleeding

Minor bleeding or blood-tinged saliva is normal during the first 24 hours. If heavier bleeding occurs, apply firm pressure by biting on gauze placed over the surgical area. Contact our office if bleeding continues.

Swelling

Swelling is a normal part of healing. Apply an ice pack or a towel-wrapped bag of ice to the treatment area during the first 36 hours to help reduce swelling.

Diet

Drink plenty of fluids and avoid hot foods or beverages immediately after surgery. Choose soft foods and liquids on the day of your procedure and gradually return to your normal diet as directed.

Pain

Take pain medication as recommended once the local anesthesia begins to wear off. Follow all instructions provided by Dr. Humes and avoid driving, operating machinery, or consuming alcohol while taking prescription medication.

Some discomfort is expected after surgery and should improve over time. Contact our office if pain worsens or does not improve.

Antibiotics

If antibiotics are prescribed, take them as directed to help prevent infection and support proper healing.

Oral Hygiene

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for recovery. Use prescribed rinses as directed and continue gentle brushing around the surgical area and healing abutment. Warm salt water rinses may also be recommended to keep the area clean.

Activity

Limit physical activity immediately after surgery, as exercise may increase swelling, bleeding, or discomfort. Gradually return to normal activities as your recovery progresses.

Wearing Your Prosthesis

Avoid wearing partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures immediately after surgery unless instructed otherwise by Dr. Humes. Your team will advise when it is safe to resume wearing your prosthesis.
