After Exposure of an Impacted Tooth

Home Instructions After Impacted Tooth Exposure

After an impacted tooth exposure procedure, it is important to protect the surgical area and follow your recovery instructions carefully. Avoid disturbing the wound or any surgical packing placed to help keep the tooth exposed. If the packing becomes loose or falls out, do not panic. Contact our office for further guidance.

Bleeding

Some bleeding or blood-tinged saliva is normal during the first 24 hours after surgery. If heavier bleeding occurs, apply firm pressure by biting on gauze placed directly over the surgical site for about 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, please contact our office.

Swelling

Swelling is a normal part of the healing process after surgery. To help reduce swelling, apply an ice pack or a towel-wrapped bag of ice to the cheek near the treatment area. Use ice as much as possible during the first 36 hours following your procedure.

Diet

Drink plenty of fluids and avoid hot liquids or hard foods immediately after surgery. Choose soft foods and liquids on the day of your procedure, then gradually return to your normal diet as directed by Dr. Humes.

Pain

Begin taking pain medication as recommended once the local anesthesia begins to wear off. Follow all instructions provided by our team for managing discomfort.

Avoid driving, operating machinery, or consuming alcohol while taking prescription pain medication. Pain and discomfort should gradually improve each day. Contact our office if symptoms worsen or do not improve.

Oral Hygiene

Keeping your mouth clean is important for proper healing. Beginning the day after surgery, gently clean your mouth after meals and continue brushing your teeth as normally as possible while being careful around the surgical area.

Rinse with warm salt water several times daily as directed until healing is complete. A clean surgical site supports faster and healthier healing.

Activity

Limit physical activity immediately after surgery. Exercise may increase throbbing, bleeding, or discomfort, especially while your body is recovering and your normal nutrition intake may be reduced. If you feel lightheaded, stop exercising and allow your body time to recover.
