What Is Bone Grafting?

When teeth are missing, the jawbone in that area can gradually shrink and lose volume over time. This bone loss may result in insufficient bone quality and quantity to properly support dental implants, making implant placement more challenging.


Bone grafting helps restore areas where bone has been lost by rebuilding the jaw structure and encouraging new bone growth. This creates a stronger foundation that allows dental implants to be placed with proper support, while also helping restore function, appearance, and long-term oral health.

Understanding Your Bone Grafting Options

Types of Bone Grafts

Autogenous Bone Grafts

Autogenous bone grafts, also known as autografts, use bone taken from another area of your own body. The bone may be harvested from areas such as the chin, jaw, lower leg, hip, or skull.


Because the graft material comes from your own body, it contains living cells that can help support natural bone growth and eliminates the risk of rejection. However, autogenous grafts require an additional procedure to collect the bone, which may not be recommended for every patient depending on their individual needs.

Allogenic Bone Grafts

Allogenic bone grafts, also known as allografts, use donated human bone that has been processed and sterilized for safe use. Unlike autogenous bone, allogenic grafts do not contain living bone-forming cells.


Instead, the graft material acts as a framework that allows your existing bone to grow into the area and gradually replace the graft material.

Xenogenic Bone Grafts

Xenogenic bone grafts are derived from animal sources, most commonly bovine (cow) bone. The material undergoes extensive processing to reduce the risk of immune reactions and ensure safety.

Similar to allogenic grafts, xenogenic bone acts as a scaffold that supports the growth of your own bone into the treated area.


Both allogenic and xenogenic grafts eliminate the need for a second procedure to harvest bone from your own body. However, because they do not contain your own living bone cells, the healing process may take longer and the results may vary compared to autogenous grafts.

Bone Graft Substitutes

In addition to using natural bone, several safe and proven synthetic and processed graft materials are available to help restore lost bone and support regeneration. The ideal graft material depends on your specific needs, treatment goals, and the condition of the surgical site.

Demineralized Bone Matrix (DBM) / Demineralized Freeze-Dried Bone Allograft (DFDBA)

Demineralized bone matrix is a processed bone graft material that contains collagen, proteins, and growth factors that support new bone formation. It is available in different forms, including powder, putty, chips, and injectable gel, allowing it to be used in a variety of bone regeneration procedures.

Graft Composites

Graft composites combine different bone graft materials and growth factors to provide the benefits of multiple substances. Examples may include collagen and ceramic combinations that closely resemble natural bone, DBM combined with bone marrow cells to support bone growth, or composite materials that combine collagen, ceramics, and autogenous bone.

Bone Morphogenetic Proteins

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are naturally occurring proteins in the body that help regulate and encourage bone formation and healing.


Synthetic and alternative graft materials offer the advantage of avoiding an additional bone harvesting procedure, which may reduce discomfort and recovery time. Each grafting option has its own benefits and considerations. Dr. Humes will evaluate your needs and recommend the most appropriate bone graft material for your treatment.
