Anesthesia in Granbury, TX

Several anesthesia options are available to help ensure your comfort during oral surgery procedures. The type of anesthesia recommended will depend on the procedure being performed, your level of anxiety, your medical history, and your individual needs.

At Granbury Oral and Facial Surgery, patient safety and comfort are always our highest priorities. Dr. Humes and our trained surgical team carefully evaluate each patient and discuss anesthesia options during your consultation to help you feel informed and confident about your care.

Personalized Sedation Based on Your Needs

Anesthesia Options

Different levels of anesthesia and sedation are available depending on the type of procedure and your comfort preferences. Dr. Humes is specially trained in anesthesia techniques and follows strict safety protocols to ensure proper monitoring throughout your treatment.

To provide general anesthesia in an office setting, oral surgeons must complete advanced hospital-based anesthesia training and meet state certification requirements. This includes extensive training, evaluation, and ongoing education to maintain the highest standards of patient safety.

If you have questions or concerns about anesthesia, our team encourages you to discuss them during your consultation so we can determine the best option for your procedure.

Usual Indications

Local Anesthetic

The patient remains totally conscious throughout the procedure. A local anesthetic (e.g. lidocaine) is administered in the area where the surgery is to be performed. Local anesthetic is used in conjunction with the other methods of anesthesia in all oral surgery procedures.

Simple oral surgery procedures such as minor soft tissue procedures and simple tooth extractions.

Office Based General Anesthesia with Local Anesthetic*

Medications are administered through an intravenous line (I.V.). The patient falls asleep and is completely unaware of the procedure being performed. Medications most commonly used are Fentanyl (opiate), Versed (benzodiazepine), Ketamine, and Diprivan. Supplemental oxygen is delivered through a nasal breathing apparatus and the patient’s vital signs are closely monitored.

General anesthesia is available for all types of oral surgery. A patient may choose general anesthesia for simple procedures depending on their level of anxiety. Most people having their wisdom teeth removed or having a dental implant placed will choose general anesthesia. General anesthesia may be necessary if local anesthesia fails to anesthetize the surgical site which often occurs in the presence of infection.

Relaxed Care With Comfortable IV Sedation

Intravenous Sedation (“Twilight Sedation”)

Intravenous sedation, also known as IV sedation or “twilight sedation,” is a commonly used option to help patients feel calm, comfortable, and relaxed during oral surgery procedures.

With IV sedation, medication is delivered through a small IV placed in the hand or arm, allowing Dr. Humes to carefully control the level of sedation throughout treatment. Patients may remain awake but deeply relaxed, or they may drift in and out of sleep and have little memory of the procedure afterward.

IV sedation can help reduce anxiety, increase comfort, and make surgical treatment a more positive experience. Because sedation is administered and monitored by Dr. Humes, many procedures can be completed comfortably in our office rather than requiring a hospital or surgical facility.

Safe Monitoring Throughout Your Procedure

How Is IV Sedation Administered?

During IV sedation, a small needle is placed into a vein and connected to an IV line that delivers medication to help you relax. The level of sedation is carefully adjusted based on your needs and monitored throughout the procedure.

The goal of IV sedation is to provide the lowest effective amount of medication needed for a comfortable and safe experience. Our team continuously monitors your condition, and additional sedation options may also be available, including nitrous oxide, depending on your treatment needs.
