After a tooth extraction, forming and protecting a blood clot is an important part of the healing process. Immediately after your procedure, bite firmly on the gauze placed over the extraction site for 30–45 minutes. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and continue applying pressure as directed.
Once the blood clot forms, it is important to avoid disturbing the extraction site. Do not rinse forcefully, use straws, smoke, drink alcohol, or brush directly around the extraction area for the first 72 hours, as these activities may disrupt healing. Limit strenuous activity for the first 24 hours to help reduce the risk of increased bleeding.
Some discomfort and swelling are normal after an extraction. Apply an ice pack or a wrapped bag of frozen peas or corn to the area to help minimize swelling. Take pain medication as prescribed and follow all instructions provided by our team. Swelling typically improves within a few days.
